There is some considerable discussion at the moment about the future
of webrings and the effects of Yahoo's takeover.
Yahoo took over Geocities who owned Webring in the early part of 1999.
However initially they left it alone, it was only in September of
this year that they moved to a new system which associates Webring and
Yahoo membership.
There has been some critisism of the new system.
On the positive side however when there system is sorted out maintenace
in particular monitoring for broken rings should be automatic. Another
advantage is the automatic inclusion of webring sites within the Yahoo
search engine. The new toolbar uses a Java applet which sits on a members
page and calls down all the Navbars for that site.
A disadvantage of this is loss of flexibility and loss of originality
in the design of the Navbars which have a much more similar look.
Here are a number of links which lead to further discussion on this.
